Where the wild things roam
Wildlife
The Maasai Mara is home to the iconic Big Five — lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino — alongside cheetah, hyena, giraffe, zebra and over 470 recorded bird species. Its open savannahs host some of the highest predator densities on Earth.
The Migration
Each year between July and October, more than 1.5 million wildebeest, zebra and gazelle thunder north from the Serengeti into the Mara in the Great Migration — one of the natural world's most spectacular events, crowned by dramatic Mara River crossings.
Conservation
Beyond the National Reserve, a network of community conservancies leases land from Maasai owners, expanding protected habitat while delivering sustainable livelihoods. Your entry fees directly fund this conservation and the communities who safeguard it.
History
Named after the Maasai people and the Mara River that winds through it, the Maasai Mara National Reserve was established in 1961 and remains one of Africa's most celebrated wildlife sanctuaries.

Best time to visit the Mara
The Great Migration — over 1.5 million wildebeest and zebra — reaches the Mara around July to October, with dramatic Mara River crossings. The green season (November–June) rewards you with lush scenery, newborn wildlife, superb big-cat sightings and fewer crowds.
Getting to the Mara
By air
≈ 45 min from Nairobi
Daily scheduled flights from Wilson Airport (Nairobi) land at Mara airstrips — Keekorok, Musiara, Ol Kiombo, Mara Serena and others. The fastest, most scenic way in.
By road
≈ 5–6 hrs · 270 km
Drive from Nairobi via Narok. The final stretch to the gates is unpaved, so a 4×4 is strongly recommended — especially in the green season.
